How to Buy Cryptocurrency with Trustly Across Europe
How Trustly Works for Crypto Purchases
Trustly sends money from your bank account directly to a crypto exchange using open banking, with no card or Trustly account needed. It is a Swedish open-banking payment provider regulated by the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (Finansinspektionen) under the EU's PSD2 directive. No app download is required: the entire process runs through your existing online banking interface.
When you select Trustly at checkout, you choose your bank from a list, log in with your usual credentials, and confirm the payment with your bank's own second-factor authentication (SMS code, push notification, or PIN). Funds transfer to the exchange within seconds.
Trustly is a fiat payment rail only: it transfers euros from your bank to the exchange, and the exchange then executes the crypto purchase at the current market rate. Not every major exchange supports Trustly for deposits; Kraken, Coinbase, and Bitpanda use SEPA bank transfers for EUR deposits instead. Exchanges that accept Trustly directly include CEX.IO, Xcoins, Switchere, and Safello.
Step-by-Step: Buying Crypto with Trustly
The checkout flow is consistent across all Trustly-accepting exchanges.
Step 1: Open an account on a Trustly-accepting exchange
Register on a platform that supports Trustly as a deposit method. CEX.IO is one option available across multiple European countries:
All European crypto exchanges require identity verification before you can deposit. Upload a valid ID document (passport or national ID) and complete a selfie check. Verification typically takes 20 minutes to a few hours.
Step 2: Choose your cryptocurrency and amount
Once verified, select the asset you want to buy (Bitcoin, Ethereum, or another supported coin) and enter the purchase amount in euros.
Step 3: Select Trustly at checkout
On the payment screen, choose Trustly or "Pay by Bank." A Trustly interface opens, either embedded on the page or via redirect.
Step 4: Pick your bank from the list
Select your bank from Trustly's bank selector. If your bank does not appear, Trustly cannot process this payment: use the exchange's SEPA bank transfer option instead.
Step 5: Log in and authenticate
Enter your online banking credentials and confirm the transfer with your bank's two-factor authentication. Have your phone ready: the session expires if you do not respond promptly.
Step 6: Complete the purchase
Funds arrive at the exchange within seconds. Your balance updates and the crypto purchase executes at the confirmed rate.
Fees, Limits, and Availability
Trustly charges no end-user fee for European consumer bank transfers. The exchange platform fee applies: Safello charges 0.99% per transaction, for example (Safello, 2024). CEX.IO, Xcoins, and Switchere do not publish Trustly-specific fees in publicly available documentation; check the exchange pricing page before purchasing. Transaction limits are set by your bank's daily online payment cap, not by Trustly.
Trustly is available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden, among other European countries.
