Buying Google Play Credit in Europe

Google Play credit works two ways: pay directly in the Play Store using a supported payment method, or buy a Google Play gift card from an authorized reseller and redeem the code on your account. Both take under five minutes.

If you have PayPal or a credit card, paying in the Play Store directly is the fastest route. If you prefer iDEAL, Bancontact, Paysafecard, or Klarna in markets other than Germany, a reseller gift card is the practical path — Google does not accept those payment methods natively in most European Play Store markets.

Country lock applies to both routes. A code bought for the Netherlands will not work on a French Play account, even though both use EUR. Before buying, verify your account country at play.google.com under Account settings.

Payment Methods Accepted Directly in the Play Store

PayPal works in the Play Store across most European markets, including the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, and Spain. Add it under Payments and subscriptions in the Play Store settings. Most PayPal transactions complete without a separate bank authentication step.

Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are the standard route. EU regulations require Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) under PSD2, so your bank will request a second confirmation — typically a push notification in your banking app. This applies to all card payments online in the EU.

Carrier billing lets certain mobile subscribers charge Play purchases to their phone bill. Open the Play Store app, go to Payments and subscriptions, and check whether your carrier appears. Not all operators or tariffs support it.

Klarna is accepted directly in the Play Store in Germany. In other European markets, buy a Play gift card at a Klarna-accepting reseller and redeem the code on your account.

Payment Methods That Require a Gift Card

Some payment methods are not supported natively by Google but work at authorized resellers:

iDEAL — the Netherlands' default bank transfer method — is not accepted in the Play Store. Buy a Dutch Google Play code at Dundle or Startselect using iDEAL, then redeem it on your Dutch Play account. Code delivery is instant after payment.

Bancontact (Belgium) follows the same approach. Buy a Belgian Play code at Startselect or Dundle with Bancontact, receive the code by email within seconds, and redeem it on your Belgian Play account.

Paysafecard is accepted at authorized resellers in Germany, Austria, and Belgium. Google does not accept Paysafecard directly in the Play Store for those markets. Switzerland is the exception: my Paysafecard is supported natively in the Swiss Play Store.

Physical gift cards are sold in supermarkets, electronics stores, and petrol stations across Europe. The cashier must activate the card at the till — check before you leave and keep your receipt until the balance appears in your Play account.

How to Redeem Your Google Play Code

On Android: Open the Play Store app, tap your profile icon, go to Payments and subscriptions, then Redeem code. Enter the code and confirm.

On the web: Go to play.google.com/redeem, sign in to your Google account, and enter the code.

Your Google account country must match the code's country. A German code will not redeem on a Dutch or French account. Disable any active VPN before redeeming — Google verifies your location at the point of redemption.

Country Tips for Europe

Netherlands: iDEAL is the fastest route. Buy a Dutch code at Dundle or Startselect, then redeem on your NL Play account. PayPal also works directly in the Store.

Belgium: Bancontact works at Startselect and Dundle. Buy Belgian codes specifically — French codes are not compatible with Belgian Play accounts despite the shared EUR currency.

Germany and Austria: PayPal and credit cards work directly in the Play Store. Klarna works in-app for German accounts. For Paysafecard, use a reseller.

Switzerland: Swiss accounts use CHF. EUR codes will not work — buy CHF codes only. my Paysafecard is accepted directly in the Swiss Play Store.

France: Carte Bancaire (Visa or Mastercard, including deferred-debit cards) and PayPal work directly in the Store. For Klarna in France, buy a French Play code from Dundle or Startselect.

What to Watch

Country lock is strict. A code issued for Germany will not redeem on a Dutch or French account, even within the eurozone. This is the single most common cause of redemption failures.

Balances do not expire in EU markets. Play credit stays on your account until you spend it.

Gift card scams are widespread. Google will never ask you to pay fines, fees, or prizes using Google Play gift cards. Any such request is fraud — do not share the code.

Large single redemptions may fail. Anti-fraud filters can block unusually high one-off top-ups. If the first attempt fails, split the amount into smaller redemptions.
