How to Book Hotels Online in Europe: Pay Later and Pay at Check-In
You can book a hotel online in Europe and pay nothing until you arrive: Booking.com and most large platforms list rooms with no prepayment, charged at check-in. If you want to split the cost instead, Klarna and PayPal instalments work at a growing number of hotel sites. These are two different systems, and knowing which one you are using prevents surprises.
What Are Hotel Bookings and How Can You Buy Them in Europe?
A hotel booking is a digital purchase in practice: you reserve online, the confirmation arrives by email, and the room is the product. Europeans book through two main routes: directly with a hotel chain such as Accor or Minor Hotels, or through an online travel agency such as Booking.com, Expedia, or Hotels.com.
Paying later means one of two very different things here. The first is reserve now, pay at check-in: no money moves until you arrive, and the platform only stores your card as a guarantee. The second is buy now, pay later: the hotel or platform is paid in full at booking, and you repay Klarna or PayPal on their schedule afterwards. The first is a hotel policy and costs nothing. The second is a credit product with its own terms.
There is also a third, gift card route: Hotels.com sells gift cards that can be redeemed against future bookings, and resellers stock them in several currencies.
Payment Methods for Booking Hotels in Europe
Which options you see depends on the platform, your country, and the rate you pick. These are the main ones for European buyers.
Pay at Check-In (No Prepayment)
Booking.com marks eligible rooms with a no-prepayment label, validates your card with a pre-authorisation before arrival, and the hotel charges you at the property (Booking.com, 2026). This is the simplest pay-later of all: no credit check, no fees, no third party. The catch: without a valid card, many hotels only hold a room until 16:00 or 18:00 on arrival day. Accor lets you book flexible rates in Germany without any payment method if you check in by 18:00 (Accor, 2026).
Klarna
Minor Hotels lets guests split bookings into three interest-free payments in 13 European markets, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, and Switzerland (Klarna, 2026). Expedia.de, Hotels.com, and ebookers offer Klarna in Germany and Scandinavia: pay in 30 days, direct debit, or instalments (Klarna, 2026). At check-in, the hotel simply sees the booking as paid. Klarna's longer financing runs 6 to 24 months with APR up to 29.99 percent.
PayPal
Booking.com accepts PayPal alongside Apple Pay and Google Pay (Booking.com, 2026). Dutch-focused sites such as Hotels.nl, which covers hotels in the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium, take PayPal or iDEAL at booking. PayPal payments settle immediately, so this is a pay-now option unless the site offers PayPal's own pay-later products at checkout.
iDEAL
Dutch buyers can pay with iDEAL at Booking.com, Expedia.nl, and Hotels.nl. The bank transfer is instant, free, and needs no credit card at all, which makes it the standard route for prepaid rates in the Netherlands. From 2026, iDEAL is rebranding to iDEAL | Wero, but checkout works the same way.
Bancontact
Belgian travellers can pay prepaid hotel rates with Bancontact on Booking.com. The amount leaves your account immediately, with no fee. Bancontact has no pay-later function, so Belgians who want to defer payment should pick a pay-at-property rate instead and bring a card for the guarantee.
Hotels.com Gift Cards
Hotels.com gift cards are redeemable only on the Hotels.com site and only for Pay Now bookings; they do not work with the Pay at Hotel option (Hotels.com, 2026). Cards are region-specific, so a US-dollar card will not redeem on a European Hotels.com account. Buy the version matching your account's region.
Where to Book Hotels Online
Which platform fits depends on whether you want to defer payment to arrival, split it into instalments, or prepay with a local method.
Booking.com is the most flexible option for pay at check-in: filter for free cancellation and no prepayment, pay with iDEAL, Bancontact, PayPal, or a card, and settle at the property. Klarna appears in eligible markets.
Expedia and its sister brands Hotels.com and ebookers are the main route to true instalments in Germany and Scandinavia through Klarna, and Expedia.nl supports iDEAL for Dutch users.
Eneba stocks Hotels.com gift cards in several denominations and currencies, useful for gifting a stay or locking in a budget. Check the region on the card before buying.
Tips and Things to Watch Out For
Expect a hold on your card at check-in. Hotels routinely pre-authorise an amount for incidentals on top of the room price. On a debit card this blocks real money for days after checkout, so use a credit card at the desk if you have one.
Pay-at-property rates usually cost more. The same room is often cheaper as a non-refundable prepaid rate. You are paying for flexibility, so compare both prices before assuming pay later is the better deal.
Cancellation deadlines still apply. A pay-at-property booking is not payment-free if you no-show: the hotel can charge the stored card under the rate conditions you accepted.
Credit checks are coming to all instalment payments. From 20 November 2026, the updated EU Consumer Credit Directive treats every deferred payment as a regular credit agreement, so expect an affordability check before Klarna or PayPal instalments are approved.
